Timing your next family trip abroad

Smart timing is everything

For all you cooped-up families desperate for an interesting trip abroad and wondering whether to try for spring break or wait till summer, the big question to ask yourself is: Can you bear the risk (however small) of the students in the family testing positive before the flight home, needing to isolate in place, and missing a week of in-person school? Those of you choosing spring break typically have a two-week break and are traveling during the first week only, or you can live with remote schooling in isolation (been there, done that). Those of you waiting for summer should choose early summer, when a possible quarantine wouldn’t interfere with the return to school.

I say the risk of having to isolate abroad is small because, of the thousands of travelers whose trips we’ve monitored during Covid, we’ve heard of only two cases of testing positive before the flight home. Both were just before New Year’s—one in Iceland (and most of the traveler’s family members who tested negative flew home without her), and one in Belize (where the resort provided a free stay for the asymptomatic quarantine). Nobody was a minor, and nobody missed school. My own students and I (pictured above in Turkey last summer) wish you the best with your decision, and for spring-break ideas, read about the cool things that the families below did during the Christmas/New Year’s school break! —Wendy

“It brought back memories of…breathtaking treetop scenes from Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. But this time, it was live and we were filming!”

“Initial discussions with Cherri and her team began in July 2021 to further investigate if 2021 would be the year to go on safari. What Covid hurdles would we encounter? How would we handle a trip cancellation if a family member tested Covid positive days prior to departure? Where is the best place to see the Big 5? She and her team answered those questions (and plenty more!) enabling us to explore Kenya for 15 days. Cherri’s team guided us from the beginning and insisted on three key items to avoid possible trip derailment and an immense financial disaster.

1. Transportation: Due to Covid country entry requirements regularly changing with little notice (the U.S. changed their entry requirements two times after we booked our trip in July), Cherri recommended a direct flight from JFK via Kenya Airways. This smart strategy limited us to only one Covid test when leaving the U.S. and avoided the possibility of additional tests for connecting international flights and airports. Cherri also recommended limiting our travel to one country, Kenya, to again avoid additional, costly Covid tests in order to enter another African country.

2. Insurance: Cherri highly recommended we purchase Trip Cancellation insurance and evaluate the optional CFAR (Cancel For Any Reason) endorsement. Granted, the policy was expensive and the CFAR endorsement only indemnified me for 75% (industry standard) of the total trip cost, but it provided peace of mind as the Delta and Omicron variants raced across the U.S. with me and my family as potential targets!

3. Health & Safety: Cherri recommended bringing paper copies of all travel documents: Covid vaccines, health insurance cards, Trip Cancellation policy, Covid test results, passports etc. and not rely on my phone as the only document location. This strategy enabled us to move through airport check-in quicker than others because Kenya Airways wanted to review paper copies and not documents on a phone. Cherri’s team also coordinated our return Covid tests at Saruni Mara with a Kenyan doctor prior to leaving. The day following the tests, results were emailed to me at Giraffe Manor, our final stop, and the staff was instrumental with printing the lab report with the QR Code which was required in order to board our flight home.

The accommodations recommended by Cherri were superb. The hospitality was warm, the bush guides were knowledgeable, the food was excellent and the facilities were immaculate and regularly wiped down to eliminate any threat of a virus. A special shout out to Sasaab and Saruni Mara for going above and beyond by arranging meaningful visits to local people! Cherri’s tip to bring some candy and small gifts for the village children as an icebreaker was all that was needed for smiles, giggles and an insider’s view of the locals’ homes and lifestyles.

I cannot forget to note the sleeper of the trip: Governors Balloon Safari. My husband and I were skeptical of this bucket list item, envisioning being stuffed in a basket with other random tourists prior to sunrise. Boy, were we wrong. An overwhelming sense of nostalgia overtook us as we rose high above the trees of Masai Mara, spotting elephants, giraffes, hippos and buffalo in their natural habitat for the hour ride. It brought back memories of our 1970s childhood: Sunday nights, the entire family parked around the vintage RCA console television, spellbound by the breathtaking treetop scenes from Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. But this time, it was live and we were filming!

How could I conclude without mentioning the game drives, the true meaning for the trip? Our guides had us up early for good reason. We regularly viewed big cats over kills every morning. Breakfast in the wild was a chance to pause and reflect. Night drives were full of excitement as we watched the drama of life and death unfold again. Africa, as revealed by Cherri’s team, is truly the ‘trip of a lifetime!’” —Beth Nury

“Tour leaders and Egyptologists were all awesome—helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and organized….”

“We had an epic family trip to Egypt over Christmas and NYEve break! Jim and his team set up this trip perfectly—and with very little input since we were too busy. We entrusted them to prioritize and plan our limited time in Egypt, and they did it quickly and brilliantly. The tool they use to share itinerary drafts and the final documents and suggestions were fantastic! When we faced some issues or had changes, they were quick to support us. When we had to cancel one of our group due to Covid, they tried to get as much $ back as possible. Scuba diving the Red Sea was a bucket list item for me and we pulled that off as well (even though it was a little cold). Tour leaders and Egyptologists were all awesome—helpful, knowledgeable, friendly and organized. St Regis in Cairo, Sonesta Star Nile cruise, and Savoy Sharm el Sheikh were all great choices too—especially NYEve party!” —Bernardine Wu

“We have just returned from a trip to Playa del Carmen and enjoyed a fabulous week at the Palmaia, House of Aia. What a gorgeous resort with a beautiful beach just 45 minutes to an hour south of the Cancun airport. Our trip was planned by Zach’s team. They arranged private transportation to/from the airport and our hotel accommodations. We had two beautiful rooms for our family of five and enjoyed the ocean views from the 3rd and 4th floors. This was a trip for just relaxing, so we didn’t plan any excursions. We enjoyed the beach and pools—a perfect vacation. The staff all wore masks and we spent most of our time outside, which made it feel more comfortable. The hotel is an all-inclusive serving top-shelf drinks, and the food was mostly vegan (though you could get seafood and meat at a few restaurants). The most delicious food we have eaten on vacation. We plan to return!” —Michele and Ken Krisko

Travel During Omicron: Dispatch from Morocco

Readers are traveling during Omicron—and we’re talking to them about what it’s like.

What happens when you’re traveling internationally and the borders of the country you’re visiting suddenly shut down? Well, if you’re a WOW List traveler, you get exactly the help you need. Below, Billie interviewed two of our readers who found themselves in that situation two weeks ago, and who not only got home safe and sound, but had a great trip to boot.

INTERVIEW

The borders closed on this couple…but their trip still had a happy ending

couple sitting on a sand dune in Morocco

Lindsey Stewart and Jon Peabody were nearing the end of their time in Morocco when they got a call from their WOW List team: Because of the Omicron variant, the government was going to close the airport in the next few days—a step that would affect incoming flights but also the ones going back home.

Fortunately, the couple, who live in Chicago, had booked their trip through WOW Listers Hicham Mhammedi Alaoui and Radia Tehitahe, which meant an entire on-the-ground operation in Morocco was ready to help out with what could have been a very stressful situation.

First, the team immediately chauffeured Lindsey and Jon from Marrakech to the Casablanca airport to arrange new flights out of the country. “The driver and the guide stayed with us the whole time and took incredibly good care of us,” Lindsey told me over the phone a few days after her return. “They gave us information on flights that we couldn’t have heard about on our own.”

Since the new flights weren’t taking off for a few days, Radia set the travelers up comfortably in Casablanca so that the wait still felt like vacation, rather than limbo. “They gave us a reservation at a really cute boutique hotel that we loved!” Lindsey said excitedly. In fact, she sounded so relaxed about the whole episode that I asked her how she’d remained so positive. “Because of Hicham and Radia and their team, the experience wasn’t bad,” she said. “We were handheld the whole time. They stuck with us. My god, what if they hadn’t? They took us to the hotel from the airport when that was a mess. They said, we’ll pick you up tomorrow and we’ll go see the mosque. They identified good restaurants for us to go to. They were incredibly attentive.”

More than that, Lindsey told me that she genuinely had a wonderful trip. “My husband and I both had a great time and enjoyed everything,” she said, recounting a cool sidecar excursion in Marrakech that took them through non-touristy neighborhoods they wouldn’t have otherwise seen; a street-food tour in Fez; and the great shopping they did, including some carpets that are on their way to Chicago. Lindsey is even glad they ended up seeing Casablanca. “The original itinerary had us skipping Casablanca because I had heard, incorrectly, that it was a dump, so I had told Radia I didn’t want to go. But, as it turns out, I found Casablanca to be extremely charming and clean—and the mosque was fantastic because nobody was there because of Covid. So that worked out great.”

They were still in for one more surprise, though.

“On the last day, the owner of the company, Hicham, and his in-country coordinator, Maryama, took us out to a really nice restaurant right on the coast. I mean, come on!” Lindsey said with a laugh. “It is exactly why you want a good company in a foreign country. We never panicked.”

INTERVIEW

Covid Couldn’t Cancel This European Christmas Trip

Hi everyone, it’s Billie, and I’ve enjoyed watching Sarah Wade’s trip evolve over the past couple of weeks. On December 3 she was all set to head out on a Christmas-market itinerary through Germany and Austria. Her plan was to focus on Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna. But you all know what happened right before she left: Covid cases spiked in Germany and Austria, many Christmas markets closed across both countries, and Austria went into lockdown.

It’s a good thing Sarah had booked through WOW Lister Gwen Kozlowski. “Gwen was in touch with us every day as this unfolded,” Sarah told me over email right before leaving home. “She began by offering some options of other places we could go and still see Christmas markets.” Using her knowledge of Central Europe and her contacts on the ground, Gwen rerouted Sarah’s group so that they could avoid Covid-compromised places without compromising on holiday cheer. “I am so excited about the new trip we have planned,” Sarah said. “We still get to have the cozy, Christmas experience just in a slightly different region.”

And so Sarah and her crew spent this past week in Poland and Hungary instead, focusing on Warsaw, Krakow, and Budapest. They still got the full yule experience—including Christmas markets, a private gingerbread-baking class, and a visit to a glass-ornament atelier where they learned how to make their own (that’s them in the photo).

Sarah emailed me again from Krakow: “The vibe has been great. Both in Warsaw and Krakow people are wearing masks indoors. We have felt completely safe and comfortable during our trip.” I asked her what kept her going through the ups and downs of the news cycle, and what her advice was for other travelers navigating this unusual time. “Having an open mind, willingness to change locations, and trust in your trip planner is essential,” she said. “Knowing Gwen is looking after things for us makes a huge difference. If we were planning this type of trip on our own, I think we would have given up.” But she’s very glad they didn’t. “Our tours are private, and restaurants and places are not as crowded as they might usually be, so no problems feeling comfortable. We have been having a great time! In many ways, it is the same trip we would take at any other time but without the crowds.”

Stay tuned for more tales from travelers! —Billie

Testing and Trip Insurance during Omicron

Two things on travelers’ minds this week

Abbot BinaxNow antigen home test for Covid, laid out on a laptop computer

When I was coming back from Egypt, I took an Abbot BinaxNow self-administered test with eMed video observation. Photo: Billie Cohen

Hi everyone, Billie here. As you know, we get traveler questions daily, and right now everybody’s asking us about testing and travel insurance. So I’m here with advice on both.

Starting December 6, in response to the Omicron variant, all travelers flying into the U.S. must show a negative Covid test taken within one day of their departure (instead of three). This goes for U.S. citizens too, whether they’re vaccinated or not. (Read the full CDC details here.) This is good news. If everyone on your flight is negative that close to takeoff, you’re all in a much safer environment. And the one-day test window is much easier to comply with than it might sound. Remember that the U.S. does not require a PCR test—which means you can pack rapid, self-administered antigen tests with you, take the test via video and wifi at your convenience, and have results in about 15 minutes. (See our articles It’s Easy to Get Tested to Come Back to the United States: Your Questions Answered and How to Get a Quick Covid Test for Travel for info on which specific tests are eligible.) WOW List local experts can also set up tests for you. Wendy, Brook, and I have had dozens of travel-related Covid tests at this point, both self-administered and arranged by WOW Listers right at our hotels—Brook even had a nurse drop in by helicopter on her safari.

Now, insurance: Omicron has triggered a lot of questions in our inbox, and we’ve answered them in our How to Buy Travel Insurance article below (we also have info on medical evacuation coverage and Cancel For Any Reason coverage in our travel insurance section). If you have a trip coming up and you haven’t bought insurance yet, it’s still an option. But know that very few policies will cover border closures. Many will cover you if you test positive before or during your trip, and there are separate emergency-assistance programs that can get you from an overseas hospital to one of your own choice at home—even if you have Covid.

Despite the doom and gloom of news headlines, we are seeing that many people are still traveling now. We hear from them every day and are monitoring their experiences. Below, read two first-hand reviews by readers who’ve just returned from Thanksgiving trips overseas. No matter when you’re comfortable traveling, we’ll be here to help. In the meantime, stay safe and have a great week. —Billie

“Our family had an incredible trip to St. Barthelemy over Thanksgiving Week 2021, thanks to Peg and her staff. They helped us locate an incredible hillside villa overlooking Gustavia, which put us within walking distance of the town for shopping and restaurants. The group included our 6-month-old granddaughter, so we had to rent various equipment and have certain foods in the refrigerator when we arrived, which all came together flawlessly. We committed to the trip in May 2021 when the pandemic was feeling relatively under control in our area, but not necessarily in the Caribbean. Peg was able to include a clause in the contract for the villa which allowed us to postpone our rental for up to a year if St. Barts was closed to tourists at the time of our reservation. Peg is based in the US but her staff includes a concierge on the island to assist with needs that might arise like last minute reservations or taxi scheduling.” —Sara Gowing

Patricia interviewed me over Zoom and it was clear that she would give me all the time I needed to describe our family’s interests. She promptly sent several proposed itineraries that included time in the jungle and at the beach. She sensibly included downtime so we wouldn’t overdo it, and also warned us about long drives and bumpy roads for some of the excursions. Our first destination, Chaa Creek, was outstanding. The staff and the food were excellent and we enjoyed the on-site activities. The off site guides were experienced and a lot of fun. We felt safe and appreciated all they had to share about Belize, as well as their senses of humor and photography skills. Our second destination, Las Terrazas, was also good and away from the noisy downtown. Belize’s Gold Standard Safety precautions were followed by all of the people we had contact with, inside and outside of the hotels. Belize in general seems to take Covid very seriously and that was a relief to all of us. It was also very convenient and stress reducing to have someone come to our hotel room to give us the rapid antigen test the day before departure.” —Stephanie Wright

We’re monitoring the situation—and cutting through the misinformation

Hi everyone, Brook here. This week we’re carefully monitoring the repercussions that the Omicron variant is having—and not having—on travel. We’re happy that the C.D.C. will likely announce that travelers boarding a flight to the U.S. must have a negative test from the previous 24 hours. (Currently, vaccinated travelers need one from the previous three days.) Since the C.D.C. accepts rapid antigen tests, and those are most accurate when an individual is contagious, every traveler is safer the closer to flying time that their fellow passengers are tested. (Such rapid tests are much easier to get overseas, or to order online and pack in your suitcase, than you may realize. See below.) What we’re not so happy about is the misinformation flying around right now. For instance, you may have seen headlines about a U.S. ban on travelers from southern Africa, but the fact is that U.S. citizens may still return home from those countries. Throughout the pandemic, the U.S. has never banned its own citizens from entering the country! If it’s the straight facts you’re seeking to determine where and how to travel safely when the time is right, we’re your source. We’re monitoring the on-the-ground situation via your trip reviews too. Your daily feedback telling us how you’ve stayed safe—and had remarkable experiences—all over the world is invaluable. Read on for three such examples from November trips. Below you’ll also find the latest border news, and Covid testing resources to help you prepare for any upcoming travel. —Brook

Goncalo organized a wonderful week in Portugal for us in November 2021. We explored the region while based in a wonderful, historic hotel in Lisbon. Because of Covid, we did not want to spend too much time indoors and so did not plan to see museums or other things we might have done pre-Covid, but rather explored the region through history and architecture. Goncalo understood our concerns about traveling whilst still in a global pandemic and assured us that the hotels were taking all precautions and that guides would all be fully vaccinated and would wear masks while in the car with us. Each morning we were picked up at our hotel by our driver (Louis) and guide (Tiago). They were both great companions for our explorations. Tiago was absolutely fluent in English (American and British as well as five other languages!). He was very well versed in Portuguese culture, history, politics, and geography and was entertaining as well as informative. Goncalo had made lunch reservations for us each day and not only chose wonderful restaurants but seemed to get the best table for us. We had spectacular views as well as delicious meals.” —Kathleen Voldstad

We went to celebrations in small indigenous villages, went to larger town celebrations, hiked waterfalls, ziplined, boated down rivers to Mayan cities and felt like Indiana Jones! We stayed at boutique hotels I never would have found. One was an authentic 16th-century hacienda where they were shooting a movie and we watched from our patio while I sat with the director! Travelling through this gorgeous state was incredible. We finished in Mexico City with a sunrise balloon ride in our own balloon over Teotihuacan, visited museums and went to Saturday markets. The highlight, though, was a private tour at the National Anthropology Museum after hours. Having the museum to ourselves with a guide who was incredible was truly magical! We packed so much in and it all went without a hitch! I never could have planned this on my own and would never have considered many of the options we did and loved. It was a perfect mix of learning, adventure and relaxation. Bravo and thank you SO MUCH!!” —Lynne Willett

JUST BACK FROM PARIS

“In this environment a good trip planner adds real peace of mind…”

“We had the pleasure of working with Jennifer for our trip to Paris 11/14/21 through 11/21/21. We had real trepidation going to France and navigating their COVID requirements. Jennifer was quite knowledgeable and it all worked out well. We loved her recommended hotel and got our room of choice. She arranged for a very specific day trip to two chateaux in the environs with a lovely guide/driver. We went to her suggested two-star Michelin restaurant for an excellent meal. We were in constant touch with her and her staff. They were prompt and responsive. She suggested a car service to and from the airport; both drivers were courteous and right on time. Pre-COVID we only used a trip planner on occasion, but in this environment a good trip planner adds real peace of mind.” —Nina Krauthamer and Charles Blum
