The Philippines and Indonesia: Letting school curriculum be the compass

Andrea Mathis’ family travels are often inspired by her children’s global studies programs. With the Philippines on the curriculum in 2025, she set her sights on visiting over spring break, part of an itinerary that also includes Indonesia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

“When we found out our first-grade daughter would be studying the Philippines this year, our nine-year-old son immediately noted the relative proximity to Sumatra, where you can see wild orangutans. We have become enamored with wildlife after spectacular safaris. And we have never truly camped before, so why not start in a jungle among wild orangutans?

No parent ever said traveling with children is easy! But it’s the most rewarding thing we’ve ever done as a family. Like anything else in life, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. We realize it’s all worthwhile when they ask intelligent questions and demonstrate a genuine appreciation for how others live. And our three-year-old daughter is convinced the Chocolate Hills in the Philippines are actually made of chocolate, so she’s pretty excited about that.” —Andrea Mathis

Italy: Tuscan villas as the home base for a family celebration

As their 50th wedding anniversary approached, Richard and Marci Abt toyed with the idea of a big party with their large, close-knit family. Instead, they decided to create a moveable feast in Tuscany with their four children and spouses and 10 grandchildren, ages 3 to 18—in all, a traveling entourage of 20.

“Plans snowballed into an extravagant, wonderful trip to Italy with two Tuscan villas, each with its own swimming pool and car, and a private chef. We are thinking of the villas as a home base to relax and explore the wine country. Some can go into Rome and Venice. I really want to see La Scala in Milan, the motherland of opera houses, and visit Pompeii again. The kids will enjoy golf cart tours in Rome and the swimming pool with their cousins. I like everything, and I like being with everyone.” —Richard Abt

Colombia: Three couples let their tastebuds lead the way

Colombia has become a magnet for foodies thanks to restaurants like Medellin’s Carmen. Photo: Amakuna

Each year, Stacey Rozen and her husband travel with two other couples, their destination determined by curiosity and mutual enjoyment of eating, drinking, laughing, and experiencing new things.

“This year we were looking for something on the exotic side, with different climates and cultures, but not crazy far away. South America is always appealing and typically a little less expensive, and we hadn’t been to Colombia. So we’ll be splitting 10 days between a few hotels—first in Bogota, then in the coffee region of Pereira at a coffee hacienda, then to Cartagena, then relaxing at the beach in Barú. We are big coffee drinkers and foodies and we love to do it all, from roadside stands to fine dining. We pretty much have traveling together down pat, respecting each other’s likes and dislikes. Once we get on the same page with a trip, it all works.” —Stacey Rozen

Kenya and Zanzibar: Introducing children to Africa’s wildlife and ecosystems

Wanderlust is baked into Kim Segal’s DNA, and that hasn’t changed since having children. When she and her husband learned they’d be attending an August 2025 wedding in London, they knew it was a perfect departure point to share one of their favorite experiences with their 6- and 8-year-old boys: going on safari.

“We will fly from London to Nairobi, then head out to Lewa Conservancy in Central Kenya. There are villages nearby where we can visit schools (something I definitely want my kids to experience—seeing how kids study in other parts of the world, and interacting with kids even if they can’t speak the same language, as the language of play is universal). They have an anti-poaching unit that you can visit to learn more about the reasons people poach, and the steps they’re taking to protect the wildlife.

From Lewa, we fly to Zanzibar, where we will spend several nights at a beautiful hotel on the beach. We then route back through Nairobi to finish up at Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Manor—the boys are going to get such a kick out of having breakfast with the giraffes! (We had to build the entire trip around when a family room was available there, 18+ months in advance.) I’m excited for my children to see and experience a culture that may be distinctly different from what they know, but to realize we’re all so much more similar than different; and for them to start thinking about how we help others, how we protect our planet, how we make the world a better place.” —Kim Segal

Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia: Revisiting favorite places through a partner’s eyes

An arts and culture immersion in Bangkok is the first stop for making memories together. Photo: Timothy Baker

The last time Mary Santiago visited Thailand, her husband was unable to come along. Now he gets to join her in some of the experiences she’s raved about, while creating memories in new places together.

“I LOVED my time in Thailand so much that I’m even looking into a second home there. In Thailand, we’ll be focused on food, culture, and the arts in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Plus elephants. The elephant experience in Chiang Rai is one of my fondest memories ever for any vacation, and years later I can’t stop talking about it, so I needed to show Scott.

I know very little about Laos, but I hear the culture and nature is just beautiful, so we added a quick stop. In Cambodia we’ll explore Angkor Wat/Siem Riep, and Shinta Mani Wild. How cool is it to zipline into your hotel to check in, and then just relax for three days near waterfalls and be pampered after our epic trip? We booked a waterfall room (which is tented), and the pictures are unreal!” —Mary Santiago

Egypt: Seeing iconic sights in the most personalized and authentic ways

We spent morning exploring ancient sights, and afternoons lounging on our own private boat.

A traditional dahabiya sailing along the Nile in Egypt. Photo: Billie Cohen

Twice before, Craig and Stephanie Smith have booked trips to Egypt, but life got in the way (thank goodness for travel insurance, they hasten to add). Stephanie has been fascinated by Egypt since seeing the Ramses II exhibit in Boston as a child. She and Craig particularly value small boutique hotels and stellar guides who can share local culture as well as history, as if experiencing a place through a knowledgeable friend.

“We are looking forward to seeing all of the iconic pyramids, temples, and tombs in person. We are eager to get a glimpse of the brand new Grand Egyptian Museum. We love having private access to experienced guides. Having a guide who takes care of all of the logistics ensures that we don’t have to worry about anything other than soaking up the history and culture, and makes the trip so much more enjoyable.

We decided that now that we were finally going to make our Egypt dream come true, we wanted to do a private trip rather than a group tour. It allows more flexibility, because Craig has multiple sclerosis, and if he is not feeling great, we can adjust the day’s activities without impacting other travelers. Many of the sites are in common with our previous itineraries, but this time around we chose a dahabiya rather than a standard Nile cruise. We like the idea of a smaller cruise with a more personalized touch, so classic and romantic!” —Stephanie & Craig Smith

Australia: Two sisters blend luxury and adventure across the entire continent

Lynne Harrison and her sister Maureen are fulfilling a long-held dream to travel throughout Australia. Lynne prefers adventurous travel and road trips; Maureen is accustomed to more upscale arrangements with her husband, who passed away five years ago. Together they’ve planned an elaborate, seven-week itinerary weaving between luxury and simplicity, and finishing with a 29-day cruise back to the U.S.

“We got a big map of Australia and chunked out routes around the places we wanted to go. We were a little shocked to see how far apart things were, and realized it was going to take seven weeks. We’re doing a transcontinental train from Sydney to Perth, then driving back along the south coast, through Margaret River and the Great Australian Bight, staying in roadhouses. We’re also going to Tasmania and Uluru, and there’ll be plenty of opportunity for adventure as well as luxury.

And then Maureen found this cruise deal that was the equivalent of a business-class ticket back to the States. So we thought, Well, why not? After two months of driving like mad right across Australia, we’ll just park ourselves on a cruise for 29 days. Because this is a major bucket-list trip, we’re willing to spend more than we would ever normally spend on a vacation. You hit retirement, and you’re suddenly aware of the things you want to do, and if you don’t hurry up and go, your friends and family are not going to be able to do it with you. I think that underscores the ‘let’s get on with it.’” —Lynne Harrison

Chile: Smart pacing for exploring the country from top to bottom

Torres del Paine National Park, Chile, Patagonia

Unrushed downtime is important for soaking up Patagonia’s Torres del Paine National Park. Photo: Johnno49/Pixabay

Now retired, Matthew Wilson and his wife Lyle York can prioritize the time and planning it takes for the style of travel that they’ve found suits them best.

“We want to see places with natural beauty and wildlife, and we want hikes/excursions. We also want to visit the occasional big city. Chile and the Andes have been on our radar for years. Most of the places we’re staying are small, all-inclusive lodges in lovely places: Patagonia, Valparaiso, Atacama.

We’ve learned that pacing is important. Trying to do too much in too little time becomes unenjoyable. Our three-night-minimum rule gives us at least two full days in a specific place. Pacing also applies to guides. Guides can be extremely helpful and add to an experience. But being guided every minute gets to be exhausting. No matter how good the guide, you need downtime. Our rule of thumb is that guides are great when they get you access to something special or help you avoid crowds or save you time by solving logistical problems. But if you want to wander around a city, or check out a museum, you don’t really need a guide. Out in nature, guides become essential. They know where to go—hiking, kayaking—and where to find scenery and wildlife.” —Matt Wilson

Norway and Denmark: The Aurora Borealis lights the way, via dogsled and snowshoe

Marianne Hane and her husband enjoy building trips around opportunities to glimpse the aurora borealis. Lightseeing in Alta, Norway shimmers with the possibility of ice-bars and reindeer herds, plus a stop in Copenhagen to sample Danish museums and restaurants.

“We wanted to try to catch the aurora borealis again while the sun is most active in its 11-year cycle. We decided to go to Alta, Norway, because it seems that it is a good location to see it, along with creature comforts that look attractive. We’ll be taking three private nightly tours to see the northern lights, a dog-sled tour of the forests around Alta, a snowshoeing trip to ice fish in a lake, and visiting the Sami tribe to see their way of life tending their reindeer herd. We’ll also be touring the Sorrisniva ice hotel and having a drink in the bar. We have never been to Copenhagen before, and are looking forward to seeing the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and Glyptoteket.” —Marianne Hane

Mary Ko and her husband are all too aware that the clock is ticking on their window to travel with their three kids (the oldest is 12) before school and college-prep commitments take over the calendar. Their latest trip includes an excursion to the observation deck of the world’s tallest building, a dune-bashing jeep adventure and desert BBQ, and a five-night stay at a secluded tropical island resort in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

“We were in India and realized it was our best vacation, so we’ve decided to go big and far and jump on the short window before our kids have college applications and jobs. Vakkaru Maldives looks ridiculous and amazing—might be our fanciest stay ever. The girls will want to see sea life, and my husband wants to relax. With young kids we like a little adventure, and a little chill time—kids need it, and we do too. Go while the kids are young! Do a morning outing and a mellow afternoon. Teach them to take polite bites of new food. My kids still remember the spider as big as my daughter’s head landing on her in Costa Rica, and being completely carsick on a serpentine road in Montenegro. Laugh about the chaos! Let it go.” —Mary Ko

They love slow travel and off-the-beaten-path activities—and are serious foodies. They wanted to head somewhere new to them.

“Italy has a perfect mix of cultural attractions, history and beautiful scenery—we chose Puglia for our 2024 trip because it’s a bit under the radar and got such positive reviews from travelers. I think we keep coming back to Italy due to the mix of attractions and to go deeper. We’ve hit the major cities on previous travels—by getting to some of the less touristy destinations we have more authentic experiences and can slow down the pace. Norway and Svalbard: unique scenery, fjords, polar bears, midnight sun…

Polar bear, Svalbard, Arctic

Tom Redburn, his wife Lisa, and their friends are retired journalists and nature photographers. Prolific travelers, Tom had wonderful memories of hiking in Norway in college and has always wanted to return.

“The trip is to fulfill a long-standing dream for both of us, a return to a place Lisa loved visiting with a close friend (who tragically died a couple of decades ago from breast cancer), and for me, to add to our great outdoors adventures by witnessing the stunning natural landscape of Norway. We’re looking forward to a different way of traveling this time. We’ve never taken a cruise (apart from a small 16-passenger adventure cruise to the Galapagos) and we’re not likely to ever take a conventional cruise. But as we’re getting older (we’re both 73), we found the idea of expedition cruising through a gorgeous remote landscape very appealing and are expecting the adventure-seeking atmosphere on the NatGeo expedition ship.

I’m probably most excited about two aspects of the trip: the spectacular scenery of the fjords and enjoying them both from the deck of our ship and exploring by small boat, kayak, and short hikes; and the chance to see polar bears in their natural environment. I also think it will be very exciting to be traveling to the land of the midnight sun during the very long daylight hours of June.” —Tom Redburn

Sue Paolucci was ready for her third WOW trip after heading to Spain in 2019 and Greece in 2022. Our team helped her and her companions land on Scotland for their next trip, chosen for its unique mix of history, landscapes, and culture.

“My husband and I are recently retired physicians, and worldwide travel has always been on our bucket list. Although admittedly in this age of COVID, and global unrest, leaving the safety of our home base gives us pause. So, we decided to travel intelligently and safely (and this is where you and your colleagues come in!) and decided that our raison d’etre would be as ambassadors of goodwill and peace as we represent our country going forward. We knew we wanted to experience local flavor, not just the usual touristy sites…and if we went to a ‘touristy site,’ we would like to see it from a different, exclusive angle. This family of four—mom, dad, and two boys ages 16 and 18—are celebrating their eldest’s high-school graduation with a trip they’ve long dreamed of.

“South Africa and safari has been on our bucket list for decades. But we just never made it happen—other trips, finances, time, distance from L.A., etc. All sorts of excuses. But with our older son’s high-school graduation this June we realized that if we were going to do it as a family, we needed to finally pull the trigger. And we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate him than to take this dream trip. It will be the first time to Africa for all of us.

Namibia is what we are most excited about. It has been on our list—its isolation, alien beauty, remoteness, uniqueness. “We didn’t want to limit ourselves to just one region in Vietnam, so Sandy provided expert guidance and recommendations for a comprehensive and diverse itinerary. We’ll start in Hanoi, travel to Hue and Hoi An in central Vietnam, and then spend time in the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam. From there, we fly to Siem Reap to explore Angkor Wat and temples off-the-beaten-tourist-path, as well as engage in hands-on experiences with locals.

There are so many elements of this trip that have us excited. France: biking, hiking, cooking lessons, exploring with grandkids…

Karen Dalfen planned this trip with the intention of sharing fun and lifelong memories with her grandkids, ages 13 and 16. They love being active and have limited patience for museums and historical sites.

“I usually plan a vacation many months ahead as I want particular rooms, restaurants, entrance tickets and plane seating. This becomes particularly important when traveling alone with grandchildren. It’s important that plane seats are close by, that rooms are either next to each other or a family suite, that meal times are spaced properly. Given that Paris is an extremely busy city, planning way in advance is a must.

We will spend half our time in Paris, and the other in the region of Aix-en-Provence. There will be cooking lessons, site seeing, craft visiting, some hiking and biking, a food tasting day, and my favorite, a night at Versailles. I have discovered that it is not important to see everything on a vacation. In fact, this can be exhausting. The deeper and richer the experience is, will in turn help to create the long-lasting memories.” —Karen Dalfen

“Patagonia, as well as both Argentina’s wine country/Mendoza and Chilean wine country, has been on my wife’s and my bucket list for a long time. We love nature and we love wine. Patagonia is one of the most preserved places on the planet with incredibly dramatic natural scenery. With man’s impact on earth, we’re concerned our natural wonders are being adversely affected and want to visit these places sooner than later. As for wine, Argentina and Chile produce some of the most iconic wines anywhere in the world. We’re looking forward to visiting the estates of some of our favorite wines that we’ve been drinking for decades, including but not limited to Catena Zapata, Viña Cobos, and Clos Apalta. Belize: snorkeling with stingrays, watching manatees, sailing with young kids…

aerial photo of Tobacco Caye with sailboat and blue green ocean

Tobacco Caye, a tiny tropical island in Belize. Photo: Absolute Belize

For Kim Segal and her family, Belize—where they can fly direct from their hometown—seemed a great international travel option with young children, ages 4 and 7, without the challenge of jet lag. They planned highlights for the whole family, including a night walk to look for nocturnal creatures and creepy-crawly bugs and spiders.

“I can’t wait to introduce my older son to great snorkeling. He was so excited to see fish in the ocean when we were in Croatia last year, but those fish were pretty boring compared to what we will see in Belize! I hope that my kids enjoy all the activities, and I really hope they like Shark Ray Alley. Watching them experience all these cool places and things—it’s as fun as experiencing them myself. I’m excited to watch them play on the beach; they spent hours doing that in Croatia and they just had a blast. Also, they got super into shell collecting in Croatia and in Cabo San Lucas, so hopefully they can do some beachcombing as well in Belize. Mainly, though, I’m just excited because travel allows me to focus solely on enjoying time with my family, something that is harder to do at home when I have a household to run and we all have busy and hectic lives. I set my email on out-of-office, let the organization I volunteer with know I’m unavailable, and I focus on having fun times together as a family.

Personally, I’m also hoping to see a manatee (haven’t seen one of those yet in the wild!), and I’m looking forward to cruising around on a catamaran checking out the views, maybe lounging on the trampoline of the boat with a good book and a glass of wine in hand, and of course I’m looking forward to a week of sunshine in the middle of winter!” —Kim Segal

“When we moved to Quito, I immediately went to your website to find people to help plan some of the trips which we had long aspired to make. Back in August, I contacted agents about trips to the Amazon, Galapagos, and Machu Picchu/Inca trail. I really didn’t know how far in advance I SHOULD have started planning, but in response to my timelines and assumptions, they all pretty much said, ‘Nope. Not enough lead time. Wrong time of year. Can’t do it.’ Together, we worked to reschedule and re-order the trips I had imagined, and we made it all work. We had hoped to be able to get two rooms on a ship, we had hoped to get a cruise of seven or eight days, we had hoped that it would be on a catamaran for a smoother trip, and it had to be during the kids’ Spring break. With Allie’s help, we got it all. I have read this line in a lot of trip reviews on your site, but without Allie, we would NOT have been able to make this Galapagos trip happen. At least not the way we wanted with only an eight-month lead. I’d recommend longer — a year — to anyone who asked.” —John Strachan

Thailand in June: bonding time with grown kids

Andy and Marci Shapiro booked a year ahead for their adventure to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Phuket with their two twenty-something kids.

“Thailand has been on our ‘must’ visit list for many years. We love Thai food; Thailand’s history and culture are fascinating; it has a reputation of having wonderful people, extraordinary diversity, and unique animal/elephant experiences; and, all of our friends who’ve visited loved it! We always book our exotic and extensive trips well in advance. Allowing ample time to plan has provided so many benefits to us over the years with our travel adventures. They include but are not limited to… getting our choice of hotels; often getting better rates because we book far in advance; getting our desired rooms with spectacular views and ideally a balcony, which is important to us; booking certain excursions; reservations for select restaurants; obtaining great seats for various events; enabling us to use points for business-class airfares if we choose. Of course, having travel insurance is critical!” —Andy Shapiro

Italy: summer trip with teens

Florence is a must for many families planning a Northern Italy itinerary. Photo: Shutterstock

After a much-loved family trip to southern Italy seven years ago, Andrea and Dave Phillips and their two teenage girls are returning to northern Italy in June 2023.

“We started thinking about this trip during our trip to Greece this past summer. We usually brainstorm about the next year’s trips during our extended summer trip. It is a great time to discuss future travel wishes for everyone at dinners, on boat trips, midday between safaris, etc. We love the Italian culture, so we are most excited about all of the cooking experiences and excursions that we have planned, as well as the wellness resort and an anniversary splurge hotel in Tremezzina, Lake Como: We are also celebrating our 20th anniversary and we honeymooned in Italy, so the timing works out perfectly. A long, multifaceted trip takes time in order to get the correct stops, excursions and flight patterns lined up, so I started planning with Maria in mid-September. Plus, fall and winter get busy, so it’s one less task to work on with everything else going on, and it’s something to look forward to!” —Andrea Phillips

Indonesia and Singapore in March, before tourists return en masse

Raja Ampat islands, Indonesia

World-class snorkeling and diving attract travelers to Indonesia’s Raja Ampat islands. Photo: Amanresorts

Judy Calvert and Doug Anderson are making the most of their early retirement and getting to Asia before the crowds return, building a three-week trip around a world-class scuba-diving site with the help of a candidate for The WOW List (a destination expert who is being tested for possible inclusion on the List).

“I think because it had stayed closed the longest, there is still an allure that Asia won’t be as busy yet. That is what we are hoping for. The research I did on Raja Ampat was that the snorkeling and diving there should be the best in the world. And because my husband dives, and I love snorkeling, it was on my radar to build a trip around that. But it’s a very obscure area, and when you want to do a VIP trip, of course I thought of Wendy’s WOW List. We are early retirees and we want to do all the big, dreamed-of trips while we are still healthy. Too many times you hear of people who are waiting until they’re retired but older, and all of a sudden the health just isn’t there. YOLO!!!” —Judy Calvert

The United Kingdom: two countries, three kids, one month

To kids, Hidcote Manor Gardens in the Cotswolds, England seems like a fairy tale come to life. Photo: Jonathan Epstein

Greg Broughton and Anne Scott are bringing their three children (ages 8, 5, and 3) to England and Scotland in July 2023.

“We chose to travel to the English-speaking world with our children so that they may more fully participate in the trip due to the common language. We didn’t want them to feel disengaged and disconnected due to a language barrier. We’re starting off in the Cotswolds, which to the kids should feel a bit like a fairy tale. Then it’s on to London for about 10 days. After that, we’re heading to York for the Viking and Roman history (and to hopefully avoid some of the summer crowds). We get a vacation within a vacation at Gleneagles, in the Scottish countryside, which we’re really excited about. We finish up in Edinburgh. Normally, it isn’t until about day five or six of our seven-day vacations that we finally achieve relaxation. We’ve had this summer 2023 trip planned since this past summer, so the hardest part is just waiting for it to finally get here!” —Greg Broughton

Japan in late spring: insider access, local experiences

Cherry blossoms draw travelers to Japan in April, but in May you’ll find lingering blooms and fewer crowds. Photo: Shutterstock

After Covid closures delayed their plans for a year, Andy and Sarah Kaplan are finally taking their four adult kids to Japan (after the sold-out cherry blossom season).

“As our kids have gotten older and they have jobs and lives, their vacation time is pretty constrained, so we are focused on doing really special trips during the time we have. After many Europe trips, we did a safari during summer ’21 — and on that success, started planning Japan for our big ’22 trip. But as we got closer to the trip, Japan had still not re-opened to outside vacationers…so 30 days before the planned trip, we rescheduled for the following year. Our travel expert was great about rescheduling and made things very easy. If I had to narrow it down, it’s the experiences that I’m most excited about. We’ll be sake tasting, doing a cooking class, seeing a master swordsmith at work, enjoying a Ryokan, and several others — including the traditional tea ceremony.” —Andy Kaplan

Retirement kickoff in southern Africa

Two couples—two of whom are friends since college—are celebrating retirement with an August 2023 trip to South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.

“I’ve been thinking about a tour of sub-Saharan Africa for 15 years. When we first contacted Julian, he cautioned that our options would be limited in the few months that remained to book the trip for September 2022; our entire group was amenable to delaying the trip for a year. The delay also enabled us to move the trip to Julian’s preferred month of August. Wildlife has always been the greatest African attraction for me, but Julian’s itinerary has taken this trip over the top. Our group is accustomed to going first class, but we were surprised by the combination of 5-star accommodations and fine cuisines in Cape Town, and world-class bush camps. Working Victoria Falls into the mix really made the whole itinerary special. I expect that when I finally hang up my traveling shoes, I will look back on this trip as one of the highlights of my traveling life. Recognizing that fact and with Julian’s counsel that the high-end camps we were seeking filled up early, especially in the prime August window, made the year’s wait worthwhile.” —Stephen Bajan

Ecuador for a multi-generational group of 7

Peggy and Bob Schuemann are taking their son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren on a spring break trip to the Galapagos and mainland Ecuador.

“This is a Christmas gift for three of our grandchildren. Our four older grandchildren went with us to the Galapagos in March 2013. We think there is no better gift than to share travel with our families, and in particular, our grandchildren. As Americans we sometimes forget that we live in the greatest country in the world. As we travel, especially to many remote countries, we find that many want to visit our country, and many want to live here. When we traveled with our daughter and her family, we spent a couple of days in Quito and went for the day to the market in Otavalo. This time we are going to the Lodge at Mashpi. We think this looks very educational for our three grandsons, who at the time of the trip will be 13, 11, and 7. Previously we traveled on a ship that accommodated around 100 guests. This time we chose a smaller vessel, the Origin/Theory. Many years ago, when we did our first trip with our older grandchildren (and their parents), I decided we all would do ‘reports.’ I make a list of subjects, such as Blue Footed Booby, Frigate Bird, Tortoise, Charles Darwin. We each do several reports and then we present them to one another. This way, when the tour guide is talking about a particular subject, the children, and we as well, are able to chime in with questions or comments. When another trip is announced, the children excitedly ask if they can do reports!” —Peggy Schuemann

Alana Jacobson’s dad is celebrating his 80th in New Zealand in April 2023 with a group of six family members, ranging in age from 13 to 80.

“My grandfather was in the Dutch Navy and spent time in New Zealand many years ago. He always spoke about how beautiful it was and how it was his favorite place he had ever visited. So when we asked my dad where he would like to go for his 80th birthday — he said New Zealand! My dad loves to hike, fish, boat, and just be in nature. He also enjoys wine tasting — New Zealand has it all! We are planning most activities together, with downtime for individuals to do what they like. Hiking, wine tasting, kayaking, fishing, helicopter tour, speed boating!” —Alana Jacobson
