We recently returned from a spectacular twelve-day trip to Athens, Naxos and Crete arranged by Jacoline and her team. From the beginning, we were confident that the trip would be a success as Jacoline zeroed in our preferences early on and had a very good idea of what we wanted to accomplish. The planning process was easy as she built at trip that balanced sightseeing, downtime on/in the water and food-centric activities. Our entire itinerary including additional helpful hints and information was delivered in a concise booklet that we repeatedly referred to during our trip. Additionally, the high quality of our guides combined with their willingness and passion for sharing what they know are invaluable ingredients for a great experience. (Smaro in Athens, she’s a treasure; Nikitas-Athens—intimate knowledge of “real” Athens; Yiota in Naxos, a wealth of knowledge; Manos in Crete—a gold mine of information and a great sense of humor, great ambassador of Crete; Dmitra in Crete—lots of fun and an irreverent sense of humor when talking about Cretan history.)
The accommodations in all three locations were just what we envisioned in terms of convenience, amenities and attentiveness. This was especially true at Kavos—where the staff, led by Loukas, go out of their way to make sure your experience at their property is memorable. Eat at their restaurant—the food is fantastic, some of the best meals we had on our trip, and make sure you get to know the hostess and servers as they are all related to Loukas and are more than happy to get to know you. The setting is gorgeous, especially poolside at sundown.
Our trip was packed with activities, and thanks to incredible weather—80 degrees, sunny, slight breeze—they were all a lot of fun. We had two boat excursions—a private yacht for the day in and around Naxos with frequent stops to swim, and then on Crete on a restored fishing boat; a trip to Spinalonga followed by lunch on the boat hosted by our guide, Manos—truly a unique experience. Our two standout experiences were both culinary ones. We had wanted to do a cooking class, but what Jacoline arranged and Manos guided at Peskesi farm was much more than that. We “harvested” our own ingredients form the organic farm, prepped (with lots of help) and cooked alongside Angelos, and ate a spectacular meal including spit-roasted lamb—a bucket list item. Our host, Shirley, was gracious, engaging and shared our thirst for good wine. This description doesn’t do justice to the experience.
Our WOW Moment was the highlight of our trip where we spent the evening at family-owned olive oil estate high up in the hills. Spectacular views and beautiful setting. We had the whole place to ourselves and were treated to a private tour followed by a multi-course meal prepared by the chef and staff. The owner and staff were particularly warm and welcoming, which only added to what was a memorable end to our Greek vacation.
The trip to Athens and Crete that we planned with Jacoline greatly exceeded all our expectations. We’ve planned trips on our own and used other trip planners, and feel that she is peerless in her planning techniques, local knowledge/contacts, and ability to connect to the client’s preferences.
We had so many great experiences and hotels that matched our desire to see many aspects of Crete—from cities to countryside to historic sites and museums to watersports and hikes—all without doing our own driving. The connections went off flawlessly. Among the highlights were half a day at an organic farm where we harvested the produce for our meal, learned how to prepare it from the team of one of Crete’s best restaurants, and ate what was one of the best meals of our lives (no exaggeration). Another day, we visited shepherds in the mountains and had a private feast under the stars overlooking the sea, while listening to local musicians.
The private tours of the Acropolis, Mycenae, Knossos, Arkady and local museums were led by guides with PhDs in archeology and tourism with deep knowledge and tolerance for our many questions. Dmitra—the guide in Knossos and Arkady—was a superb storyteller and made the ancient places feel contemporary and relatable. Our Athens food tour by Nikitas skipped the souvlaki joints and touristic stores, taking us to small local vendors to taste unusual honeys, a basement lunch place serving legume stews, lots of local cheeses, and wonderful pastries.
As requested, all our hotels were somewhat quirky but with warm welcomes and high service levels. We tried a lot of food during the trip, including an Athens food tour, an olive oil producer tour and dinner, fine dining in Athens, and fresh fish restaurants by the sea. Crete is definitely a place to feel good about gaining a few pounds.
An example of Jacoline’s thoughtful planning: because there were few scheduled flights between Chania and Athens, we faced a potential 7-hour layover at the Athens airport on our last day. Jacoline arranged a driver to pick us up from the Chania flight and take us to a town near the Athens airport to view the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, followed by a seaside fish taverna frequented only by locals. What could have dragged down our holiday ended up a relaxing happy final experience.
All of these planned activities exceeded our expectations. But—we couldn’t have planned for or imagined some special moments of the trip. I believe that the magic of Jacoline’s planning was to allow for and encourage serendipity in our experience, by picking great guides/experiences and pacing the trip well. Our guides, hosts, drivers, and others treated us not as clients but as guests. As such there was a warmth and also an openness to spend a few hours to chat with us about their lives, the Olympics, wind farms, family— you name it. Also, the beauty of the locations made us slow down and disconnect from devices and distractions. I don’t think I will forget sitting on the balcony of our hotel near Chania at dawn, watching the sunlight gradually illuminate the white walls of Chania’s old town. The jagged high cliffs at Imbros Gorge made the climb worth every step. And dozens of other places and moments that I adored….
Thanks to Wendy Perrin for helping us connect to Jacoline, and thanks to Jacoline for an amazing trip!
Jacoline is the best travel planner we’ve ever used. Extremely knowledgeable, timely in response, and generally a pleasure to work with. I can’t recommend her highly enough.
After the success of our trip to Paris and Provence in the spring of 2023 (so expertly planned, postponed due to Covid, postponed again due to Covid and finally, wonderfully executed three years after originally planned!) designed by Michael Eloy, we knew that we would seek out the help of Michael’s colleagues to help us plan our trip to Greece. Wendy Perrin connected us to one of her WOW List planners, Jacoline Vinke, to start the process.
Jacoline began by listening to us and asking questions. We knew the type of vacation we wanted and what was important to us, but had no idea of where to go in Greece or how to create our desired trip. She presented us with two rough sketches to begin and we worked together to refine our trip.
Jacoline and Evan created our dream trip! We visited Athens, Nafplio, Sifnos and Naxos and met the most lovely guides and hosts who welcomed us into their business, vineyard, farm or home. We enjoyed everything from archeological sites (as far back as the 12th century B.C.) to an olive press factory, truffle hunting followed by lunch in a vineyard with freshly grated truffles, an evening of Greek music and dance and a homemade dinner with a local organic farmer and his family, a visit to three pottery workshops with the opportunity for a short lesson, a lovely free-range animal farm, several days on the water snorkeling and seeing beautiful islands, a cooking lesson and time to rest, relax and enjoy the most amazing views from our hotels. And the food!!!
Jacoline and Evan took care of all the arrangements and reservations. Private transfers were smooth, our car rentals were easy, guides were on time, hotels were lovely. We were given options and information to make the most of our trip.
Thank you both. And thank you, Wendy.
